Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight nears reality

Manny Pacquiao’s status as the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer is nothing compared to the level of idolatry which ‘Pac-mania’ has generated in the Philippines. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Manila on Thursday to hail their conquering hero after his destruction of America’s Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, last weekend in Las Vegas. “You defeated the most popular boxer in the world,” President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said in an address at the Malacanang Presidential Palace. “Your discipline and courage are an inspiration to Filipinos.”

The 29-year-old southpaw, who began his career as a 7st8lb light flyweight, did not so much defeat former World Boxing Organisation middleweight (11st6lb) titleholder De La Hoya as clinically end his career. De La Hoya, 35, was exposed as a shell of the fighter who has won titles in six divisions from lightweight (9st9lb) to middleweight and Pacquiao’s brilliance has elevated him into the biggest box office star in world boxing. His eighth-round technical knockout victory wrecked De La Hoya’s plans of a superfight next May at Wembley Stadium against Ricky Hatton and the Manchester Hitman’s team must compete with former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr, who has announced his comeback from retirement, for the first shot at the sport’s new superstar.

“Manny wants to fight the best and the Mayweather fight is the one he wants, probably at a catchweight of 143lb,” Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, confirmed. “Mayweather says that he is going to have his father and uncle [Floyd Sr and Roger] training him and I feel that Manny can definitely deal with him. Floyd’s a great fighter but he has flaws that we can take advantage of, no doubt about it.”

Roach, who is also training Amir Khan in his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, is responsible for Pacquiao’s transformation from a one-dimensional puncher into the all-round boxer whose virtuosity shocked De La Hoya. He has also witnessed Pacquiao’s wild popularity in the Philippines where the boy from Bukidnon, who struggled to survive on the streets of Manila before a boxing trainer, Alberto Mang Eleng, offered him lodgings, is now almost as popular as the president.

“Manny is the man and I’m a celebrity over there just because I train the man. It’s crazy,” Roach said. “I have seen Manny give away money and food parcels to people who arrive at his home in their dozens and I’m genuinely afraid that he could end up giving away all of his money. He has a very generous spirit, he cares deeply about his country and he wants to make it better for the people. He ran for congress and got defeated only because the people want to see him fighting still – even his opponent admitted this – and one day he’ll run for president and he will probably win.”

Whenever Pacquiao fights an informal ceasefire is observed in the ongoing war between communist and Muslim rebels and the Catholic government forces. “If Manny fights, the guns will be silent,” said Lt Esteffani Cacho of the military’s Western Mindanou Command. “I know that everybody will be watching PacMan.”

Pacquiao-Hatton ‘in Las Vegas May 2’

MANILA, Philippines—Manny Pacquiao is headed for a showdown against fellow brawler Ricky Hatton in a duel that will most likely take place on May 2 at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas’ Thomas and Mack Center, Internet reports bared Sunday.

Meanwhile, from his cushy retirement perch, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is considering fighting the Filipino ring hero in a bout, where the “Pretty Boy” hopes to “beat his [expletive],” the boxer’s confidante revealed.

Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Council lightweight champion, will be gunning for a fifth weight crown against Hatton, who holds the International Boxing Organization junior welterweight belt.

“My guy is on board,” Pacquiao promoter and Top Rank chief Bob Arum told Steve Lillis of England’s News of the World. “I think Ricky’s on board and I am very upbeat.”

Steve Kim of SecondsOut.com said the match is a “done deal.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions that handles Hatton’s fight, also said that the fight has been virtually green-lighted.

The bout between Pacquiao, boxing’s acknowledged pound-for-pound king, and Hatton, the beer-guzzling “Hitman” of Manchester, was nearly sidelined by Mayweather’s sudden interest in coming out of retirement.

A report by ESPN’s Dan Rafael, however, made it seem like the Pretty Boy is waiting for a snowballing clamor for Pacquiao-Mayweather before making a final decision.

“Floyd has given Team Mayweather the green light to... evaluate the biggest fights for him, to come back to him and present it to him,” Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s best friend and adviser, told ESPN.com.

If Pacquiao beats Hatton to polish a pound-for-pound crown he validated with an eighth-round TKO of Oscar De La Hoya last Dec. 6, fans and experts are expected to mount a call for a bout between the Filipino and Mayweather, the former pound-for-pound king.

And that could be big enough to lure Mayweather out of retirement.

“If Floyd considers something, it would be the biggest thing,” Ellerbe told ESPN.com.

He said Mayweather thought De La Hoya’s conqueror was “an excellent fighter and it was a tremendous win.”

But Ellerbe said that Mayweather issued a little warning to Pacquiao.

“Floyd said, ‘He’s a good fighter, but I’ll beat his [expletive].”

Hatton’s promoter confirms Pacquiao-Hatton spring fight

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The promoter of British boxing star Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton has confirmed negotiations for a spring fight between the British boxing star and Filipino icon Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao, most likely in Las Vegas.

Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions chief executive officer, said he has been in touch with Hatton and his father and manager Ray for a matchup at welterweight between the two sluggers.

Schaefer’s statement is in line with the announcement made in the Philippines by Top Rank’s Bob Arum that he is working on a Pacquiao-Hatton super fight for May 2 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knock outs), who cemented his stature as the world’s best boxer pound-for-pound after stopping Oscar de la Hoya on December 6, said he is ready to fight either Hatton or Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the first half of 2009.

The Filipino star had never fought above 135 pounds (61 kilograms), but he moved up two weight classes to batter De La Hoya, who didn’t get off his stool after the eighth round.

The proposed fight would match boxing’s unofficial pound-for-pound champion against one of the world’s most popular brawlers, assuredly generating huge paydays for both fighters.

“I’m encouraged by the way it’s going, and I’m talking to the Hattons [on Friday] again,” Schaefer said. “You really have two of the most popular fighters of their generation fighting each other, and that’s the kind of fight we want to make.”

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knockouts) seems to be at the peak of his skills and international fame after stopping Oscar de la Hoya in their long-anticipated bout on December 6.

The Filipino star had never fought above 135 pounds (61 kilograms), but he moved up two weight classes to batter de la Hoya, who didn’t get off his stool after the eighth round.

He would move back down one weight class to face Hatton (45-1, 32 knockouts), the hard-living English star who won his last bout against Paulie Malignaggi on November 22, defending his 140-pound (63.5-kilogram) title.

Schaefer said the sides are still negotiating the fight’s location, but he would like to see it in boxing’s capital city.

“This is a fight with tremendous global appeal, and both of them have built up a very strong following here,” Schaefer said. “With Manny’s following in Asia and Ricky’s support in Europe, you could say Las Vegas is the center of everything.”

Golden Boy has a promotional deal with Hatton. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who represents Pacquiao, was traveling back from the Philippines on Thursday after celebrating Pacquiao’s title.

Schaefer also will soon make a formal announcement of a February 28 bout in Houston between Juan Manuel Marquez and David Diaz.

Marquez (49-4-1, 36 knockouts), the Mexican star who has been Pacquiao’s toughest opponent in recent years, won his lightweight debut in September, stopping Cuba’s Joel Casamayor.

Manny Pacquiao ready to box Ricky Hatton

The queue to be Ricky Hatton's next opponent has already started and Manny Pacquiao stands at the front of it. Pacquiao, the WBC lightweight champion from the Philippines, faces Oscar De La Hoya in the same ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on December 6, but win or lose, it could set up a clash with Hatton.

While a bout with De La Hoya would be higher profile - and he is the favourite for next month's bout - Pacquiao, who has won world titles at four weights from flyweight to lightweight, would be Hatton's favoured choice. He is smaller, at 29 is in the prime of his career and is the main rival to Joe Calzaghe as the world's best pound-for-pound boxer.

He also says that he would be happy to come to Great Britain for the bout. “I want to come to the UK because I've never been there, I want to see the place,” Pacquiao, who has been training with Amir Khan in Hollywood, said. “I'd like to fight in front of a big crowd. I know it would be a great, great fight if it were to happen. I'm very comfortable at 140lb [light-welterweight] so I would be OK to fight Ricky.”

Oddly, Pacquiao thought he would be facing Hatton this year. “When I was told I would be fighting on December 6, I was originally told I would be fighting Ricky,” Pacquiao said. “But now it's Oscar. I wasn't disappointed because I know I have a lot of time to have that fight.”

Joe Ramos, Pacquiao's manager, said he would be happy to start talks after the bout with De La Hoya. “I haven't spoken to the Hattons,” he said. “We want to get this fight out of the way. I think both guys are at their best at 140lb. Let's do it in the UK. I would love to have it in front of another big crowd and I know Manny would love that. Fighting Oscar is a dream come true and fighting Ricky in his home town is another dream in front of a huge crowd.”

Hatton wants Pacquiao in 2009, Mayweather next

MANILA, Philippines – Reigning International Boxing Organization (IBO) light welterweight champion Ricky “The Hitman" Hatton is itching to face current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in 2009.

In a report at the British website inthenews.co.uk, Hatton says if he wins against Pacquiao he would want to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. next for a possible rematch in their December 8, 2007 World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight title bout.

Hatton, challenging Mayweather for the WBC welterweight crown, lost that match earning his lone setback in 46 fights. His loss against Mayweather snapped his 43 match win streak.

Hatton said he is ready to hang his gloves if he wins both fights against Pacquiao and Mayweather after having nothing else left to achieve from the sport that he played since turning pro in 1997.

Hatton saw a chance of earning a mega-buck fight against Pacquiao after the Filipino boxing icon, who fought two weight divisions above his normal lightweight class, peppered Oscar De La Hoya into submission in their Dream Match at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds.

He said a win against Pacquiao would serve as a warm up for his anticipated rematch with Mayweather, who retired last year.

Hatton, who hired Floyd Mayweather Sr. as his trainer, said he wants to retire at the peak of his career if he could beat Pacquiao and Mayweather. Hatton had expressed his desire to retire in 2009.

Pacquiao amasses huge lead in ESPN’s ‘champ of champs’

MANILA, Philippines – Might as well add the ESPN Star Sports' Champion of Champions’ title to Manny Pacquiao’s growing list of achievements.

Pacquiao, who fought in three weight divisions to go 3-0 in 2008, could very well be the winner of the online poll contest as he enjoys a huge lead over Malaysian squash player Nicol David.

As of Saturday, results of the online poll gave Pacquiao an overwhelming 80.74 lead over Nicol. The Filipino boxing icon garnered 90.73 percent of the votes while the world’s top ranked squash player earned 9.63 percent.

Pacquiao made history in 2008 when he became the first Asian to wear four world titles in three different weight divisions. He is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) and The Ring magazine’s super featherweight champion after beating Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in a split decision on March 15.

He then added the WBC lightweight belt after scoring a ninth-round knockout win over David Diaz on June 28. But what made Pacquiao sort of a demigod in the boxing world is his eight-round demolition of future Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya on December 6.

He also earned the nickname as the “Mexecutioner" after nine of his last 14 fights were against Mexican champion boxers. He fought Erik Morales three times and, faced Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez twice in that span.

Pacquiao won 12 of those 14 fights losing only once in his first meeting with Morales on March 19 2005. He was held to a draw by Marquez on May 8, 2004 and had to wait for four years before beating the Mexican in a split decision.

He earned the Ring Magazine’s top pound-for-pound boxer after then holder Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired this year. Pacquiao is also a former Ring Magazine featherweight champion, once hold the International Boxing Federation bantamweight crown and held the WBC flyweight belt.

David earned a spot in the finals after becoming the first Asian to top the world rankings. She is the reigning World Open and British Open champion, titles which she also won in 2005 and 2006.

Pacquiao and David arranged a finals showdown after beating cricket superstars Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly in the semifinals.

The final day of voting is on December 30 with the winner to be announced in ESPN Sports Center.

Other big name sports stars in the list are NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, Indian cricket sensation MS Dhoni, Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo, reigning world no.1 tennis player Rafael Nadal, Beijing Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra, F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, legendary football manager Sir Alex Ferguson, world 100-meter record holder Usain Bolt, Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, golf’s Tiger Woods and world MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi.

Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton Analysis: It Will Be a Hell of a Fight

While Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is enjoying the fruit of his hard labor in the Philippines with friends and family, talks are now looming that Ricky "Hitman" Hatton would likely end up as the next foe of the Filipino Pound-For-Pound king.

With the absence of Floyd Mayweather, recent report disclosed that sometime in early May next year, Pacman and Hatton will definitely square off. That means Hatton wish for a crack with the Filipino Superstar will be granted.

Pacquiao-Hatton will be a great fight because of the explosiveness of these two fighters in the ring. Hatton is known for his all-the-way boxing style. He loves to attack the body and throws lots of wild punches on his opponent. He is also a quick puncher and has good footwork. He is a brawler.

However, this type of style is an advantage for Pacquiao. Therefore, I conclude that Hattons fighting style is tailor made for the Pacman. We saw several fights of Hatton, where obviously he applied pressure on his opponent by hugging and leaning especially if he catches his opponent on the corner.

Hatton's punches sometimes comes from the outside and he has a rotten defense on his armor. If the Hitman's style will not change come fight night, then I foresee another stoppage in the early or late rounds.

Pacquiao is now a complete fighter, with different fighting style every time he climbs up the ring. He continues to improve his speed and power and his stamina is doesn't fade despite unleashing several combinations in the early rounds. He is a machine with good defensive skills.

Pacquiao will withstand the power of Hatton, because the Pacman has already proved his tough chin against bigger opponents such as David Diaz, and recent victim Oscar dela Hoya. Lateral movements will bother Hatton where he will lose his patience in the late rounds for failing to connect damaging blows against the pound-for-pound king.

We saw this when he faced Mayweather, he became careless in the late rounds after he was not able to subdue the Pretty Boy in the earlier rounds.

Against his fight with Malignaggi, Hatton failed to finish his opponent despite connecting clear punches. Malignaggi quits in the 11th round, not because he was battered heavily by Hatton, but it's because he refused to use both his hands and relied more on his jab, which irked his coach and prompted the stoppage. Malignaggi was fighting one handed against a two handed opponent, but despite of that the Magic Man did not go down.

Now, Pacquiao loves to use the four square jungle, and has an accurate and powerful shot. He shoots like an expert dart master, connecting bull’s eye. Hatton style will definitely fit the pound-for-pound king and I’ll tell you come fight night it will be a hell of a fight, but there’s a saying that "Heaven will prevail over Hell." You get me?

Floyd Jr. next if Pacquiao beats Hatton

With his fight against British slugger Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton almost all but sealed, boxing superstar Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao is likely to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., if he gets past Hatton in a match being worked out for May 2 in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, the former pound-for-pound king and unbeaten welterweight world champion, has hinted his desire to return to the ring and fight anyone who could offer him a mega fight.

“Floyd, 31, has given Team Mayweather the green light to go out there and evaluate the biggest fights for him, to come back to him and present it to him. Then he will consider it,” Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s best friend and adviser, told ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael on Saturday.

Pacquiao, who succeeded Mayweather as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, has announced his desire to take on both Hatton and Mayweather in the coming year.

His trainer Freddie Roach earlier said that if Manny beats both Hatton and Mayweather, the Filipino icon could retire at the top of the sports—his legacy secure as one of the best boxers in the world.

Roach confirmed that if the Paquiao-Hatton May 2 super fight is wrapped up, “PacMan” will be back at his famous Wild Card Gym in Hollywood to resume his training early.

Ellerbe, who also advises Mayweather in the business of promoting concerts, said that if they “present Floyd with something he’s interested in, he will do it.”

He added that although Mayweather has kept a low-profile and stayed away from the boxing limelight since retiring in June, he did watch Hatton stop Paulie Malignaggi on November 22 and Pacquiao dominate Oscar de la Hoya on December 6.

Ellerbe said Mayweather thought Pacquiao was “an excellent fighter and it was a tremendous win.”

He, however, added that Floyd had told him, “He [Pacquiao] is a good fighter, but I’ll beat his ass.”

Floyd “did see Hatton’s fight and said it was the best Ricky had looked in a long time with his [estranged] dad [Floyd Mayweather Sr.] training him,” Ellerbe said. “He said Ricky looked sharp with his father in the corner.”

When asked if Floyd Jr. would need any tune-up fight in the event he returns to the ring, Ellerbe said, “Hell, no. If [he] considers something, it would be the biggest thing.”

Ellerbe said that wherever Floyd Jr. goes, he is inundated with fan requests for him to fight again, especially over the past month while they have been out on the road co-promoting the “I Am Music Tour,” which features artists Lil’ Wayne, Keyshia Cole and T-Pain.

Floyd Jr., who has not fought since knocking out Hatton in the 10th round in December 2007, has kept a low profile from boxing, avoiding even going to major title bouts.

Ellerbe said Floyd Jr. has rarely been at fights other than at the Chad Dawson-Antonio Tarver light heavyweight title bout in October in Las Vegas, and only because a young fighter the boxer works with was on the undercard.

Pacquiao off to LA with upcoming Hatton fight on mind

MANILA, Philippines - Although he plans to spend spend the holidays with his family in Los Angeles, Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s has also set his sights on his much-awaited match against reigning junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton.

Earlier reports indicate that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc. has already met with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaeffer, Hatton’s promoter, to discuss minor details of the 2009 fight.

Pacquiao, however, kept mum about the details.

“Wala pa. Wala naman pa kaming usapan about that so siguro hintayin na lang natin (There’s no final talks of the fight. Let us just wait for further developments)," Pacquiao said when he was interviewed during Monday night’s victory party hosted by Deputy National Security Adviser Chavit Singson.

The celebration was attended by ambassadors from Italy, France, Turkey, and Great Britain as they partied with Sen. Gregorio Honasan and movie stars Rufa Mae Quinto, Jasmine Villegas, and Diana Zubiri, and singer Rico J. Puno.

Schaefer, in an earlier report said, that Hatton’s father is hoping they could finalize details of the fight before year’s end.

The Pacquiao-Hatton fight is being planned on May 2 with Las Vegas as one of the venues being considered.

If Pacquiao takes on Hatton, the catch weight will be at junior welterweight (140 lbs), Hatton's domain. Pacquiao fought at 132 lbs last April, 135 in June and 147 earlier this month when he blasted Oscar de la Hoya.

Pacquiao is currently the world lightweight (135lb) champion, while Hatton is the reigning 140lb world champion.

Pacquiao left for Los Angeles Tuesday night with his sons and daughter to join wife Jinky where they would spend Christmas and New Year there.

Jinky is also expected to give birth next month to a baby girl they would name Queen Elizabeth. – GMANews.TV

Report: Pacquiao, Hatton sides hope deal settled before year ends

MANILA, Philippines – The promoters of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton stressed that a match pitting their fighters is close to being finalized, ESPN.com reported on Saturday.

Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc., Pacquiao's promoter, told ESPN.com writer Dan Rafael that he is "upbeat" about developments.

"I think we're there. We're just mopping up little details."

Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Hatton, echoed the optimism.

"I talked to Ray Hatton [Ricky's father] and my hope is that we can finalize everything before the end of the year. I feel pretty good about it."

A May 2 date is being eyed, both promoters said. Although Las Vegas is seen as the host city, a specific venue has yet to be named.

Pacquiao, who is on track to be named 2008's Fighter of the Year, will be fighting in his fourth weight division in as many matches.

If Pacquiao takes on Hatton, the catch weight will be at junior welterweight (140 lbs), Hatton's domain.

Pacquiao fought at 132 lbs last April, 135 in June and 147 earlier this month when he blasted Oscar de la Hoya.

Promoter: Pacquiao fight vs Hatton nearly finished

SAN FRANCISCO — Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton are close to finalizing a deal to meet in a 140-pound (63.5-kilogram) bout on May 2, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The proposed fight, likely to be held in Las Vegas, would match boxing's unofficial pound-for-pound champion against one of the world's most popular brawlers, assuredly generating huge paydays for both fighters.

"I'm encouraged by the way it's going, and I'm talking to the Hattons (on Friday) again," Schaefer said. "You really have two of the most popular fighters of their generation fighting each other, and that's the kind of fight we want to make."

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 KOs) seems to be at the peak of his skills and international fame after stopping Oscar De La Hoya in their long-anticipated bout on Dec. 6. The Filipino star had never fought above 135 pounds (61 kilograms), but he moved up two weight classes to batter De La Hoya, who didn't get off his stool after the eighth round.

He would move back down one weight class to face Hatton (45-1, 32 KOs), the hard-living English star who won his last bout against Paulie Malignaggi on Nov. 22, defending his 140-pound (63.5-kilogram) title. Hatton won twice this year after the only loss of his career, to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December 2007.

Schaefer said the sides are still negotiating the fight's location, but he would like to see it in boxing's capital city.

"This is a fight with tremendous global appeal, and both of them have built up a very strong following here," Schaefer said. "With Manny's following in Asia and Ricky's support in Europe, you could say Las Vegas is the center of everything."

Golden Boy has a promotional deal with Hatton. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who represents Pacquiao, was traveling back from the Philippines on Thursday after celebrating Pacquiao's title.

Schaefer also will soon make a formal announcement of a Feb. 28 bout in Houston between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz.

Marquez (49-4-1, 36 KOs), the Mexican star who has been Pacquiao's toughest opponent in recent years, won his lightweight debut in late September, stopping Cuba's Joel Casamayor.

Diaz (34-1, 17 KOs), a longtime lightweight champion, won his comeback fight against Australia's Michael Katsidis in September after losing his three 135-pound (61-kilogram) title belts last March to Nate Campbell. - AP

Roach wants ‘De la Hoya-level training’ for Pacquiao vs Hatton

MANILA, Philippines – If Manny Pacquiao’s projected showdown with Ricky Hatton finally gets the green light, trainer Freddie Roach wants his boy to undergo the same regimen as he did when he trained for Oscar de la Hoya.

“I want him to be there (Wild Card gym) first week of March," said Roach, stressing that the length of training should just be fine for Pacquiao in a proposed but yet-to-be-finalized May 2 play date with the Hitman in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao prepared for more than two months for his fight against De la Hoya, a match that ended in a stunning eight-round technical knockout win for Pacquiao.

That Roach wants his most prized ward to mimic his preparation time with De la Hoya for Hatton is well-founded.

“Hatton’s a very good body puncher and is very dangerous," he admitted.

A former junior lightweight champion, the noted puncher from Manchester, England packs an impressive win-loss record of 45-1, 32 of which came by way of knockout.

His relentless style and vicious punching makes him “tailor-made" for Pacquiao, according to the two-time Trainer of the Year.

“Manny should stay away from the ropes when he fights Hatton," said Roach.

Along with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, the celebrated trainer arrived in the country Tuesday to join the lavish celebration of Pacquiao’s 30th birthday. The two left for Los Angeles Thursday night via Philippine Airlines. – GMANews.TV

Hatton lawyer: Pacquiao camp was never in touch

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao is fighting Ricky Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas.

The only problem is Hatton doesn't know about that yet.

Hatton's lawyer admitted in a BBC Sport report on Wednesday that the English boxer's camp hasn't even began talking to Pacquiao's people yet.

Bob Arum, whose Top Rank Inc. promotes Pacquiao, has said recently that he has been in negotiations with Team Hatton.

"We're in negotiations with the (Ricky) Hatton people and I’ll leave it at that," Arum said in a separate report.

Gareth Williams told BBC Sport that no such negotiations have transpired.

"He's [Arum] not talked to us at all," Hatton's lawyer said. "We're happy to fight Pacquiao but it has to be on our terms."

Arum said that he is looking at a May 2 date for a Pacquiao-Hatton tiff and will most likely hold it in Las Vegas, not in London where Hatton is based.

Williams denied anything close to being formalized.

"We won't be bullied. We've had no contact whatsoever with him. That is the fight we want to make but we've got other options, we will do what is best for us." - GMANews.TV

British paper names Pacquiao as world’s top fighter

MANILA, Philippines – A British newspaper has named Manny Pacquiao as the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter, beating nine other boxers and mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters.

To shed light on the issue, The Sun compiled a list of who they think deserve to be called “Top 10 fighters."

Pacquiao beat the already retired Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Anderson Silva, who is still undefeated and the reigning middleweight champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in a poll made by The Sun from both boxing and MMA fans.

Pacquiao earned the status after an eight-round demolition of Oscar De La Hoya in their “Dream Match" last December 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He forced the Golden Boy to call it quits as the ninth round is about to start.

The Filipino boxing icon, who is celebrating his 30th birthday Wednesday, has only lost three times in his 53 fights where he won 48 times with 36 by way of knock out. He was twice held to a draw by Juan Manuel Marquez and Agapito Sanchez.

Mayweather, who is aiming to come out of retirement to fight Pacquiao, placed second while Silva placed third. BJ Penn, another MMA fighter who was the first non-Brazilian gold medalist in the Mundial World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship came in fourth.

Marquez placed fifth and is challenging Pacquiao for a rematch after losing by split decision in their fight last March.

Rounding up the Top 10 pound-for-pound list are UFC’s Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (no.6) and Georges St. Pierre (no.7), light heavyweight Ring champion Joe Calzaghe (no.8), reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (no.9) and World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight champion Miguel Torres.

Meanwhile, the World Boxing Council (WBC) – one of the largest boxing organizations in the world – also gave Pacquiao a grand recognition by naming him as “World Boxer of the Year."

A separate online survey made by ESPN Sports also showed Pacquiao as the fourth most favorite sports hero.

Pacquiao, in an interview with 24Oras, and his promoter Bob Arum were elated by the results. The ring icon, however, humbly said he does not want such recognition to get into his head. “Ayokong isipin yan, pasalamatan natin lagi ang Panginoon dahil sa kanya lahat ito (I don’t want to think about it. Let us just thank the Lord because these are all his)." – With Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV

Pacquiao sheds tears in his thanksgiving Mass

MANILA, Philippines — The world’s pound-for-pound king Emmanuel “Manny" Pacquiao on Wednesday shed tears upon hearing that God heard his prayers during a thanksgiving Mass held for his 30th birthday.

QTV’s Balitanghali’s JP Soriano reported that Pacquiao was unable to hold back his tears when the priest celebrating the Mass explained in his homily how Pacquiao’s victory made him cry.

“Pinipigilan kong maiyak. Naiyak ako kanina kasi totoo ‘yung mga sabi ng pari na hindi dahil sa magaling ako, nanalo ako hindi dahil sa masipag akong mag ensayo, nanalo ako dahil napakinggan ng mahal ng Panginoon yung dasal ko (I was trying to hold back my tears from falling. I cried because what the priest said was true. I did not win because I am a great fighter, not because I train hard. I won because God always listens to my prayer)," Pacquiao said after the Mass.

The prelate also thanked him for the honor he brought to the country.

The Mass was held at Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish in Pacquiao’s hometown in General Santos City. During the Mass, he was accompanied by his mother - Aling Dionisia - and his supporters and well-wishers.

Right after the Mass, Pacquiao proceeded to Malungon, Sarangani to join his relatives and friends for lunch.

The report also said that it was "all systems" go for the grand birthday celebration Pacquiao.

The party would be held Wednesday evening at the convention center of KCC Mall – the largest in General Santos City.

About 1,500 people including President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Top Rank Promotions chief executive officer Bob Arum are expected to attend his “strictly invitational" Las Vegas themed birthday bash.

Pacquiao’s coach Freddie Roach and his defeated opponents Marco Antonio Barrera and David Diaz were also reportedly attending the celebration.

The Filipino boxing icon recently routed Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya in their much-touted "Dream Match" in Las Vegas last December 6. Dela Hoya was reportedly invited to the birthday party but could not make it. - Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV

Promoters leaning toward Pacquiao-Hatton ... in April?

MANILA, Philippines - The group promoting hard-hitting Ricky Hatton of England will begin talking to their counterparts on Manny Pacquiao's side before the month ends reportedly to see where the discussion of Pacquiao-Hatton showdown "goes".

Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer said on Tuesday that he and Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, would begin discussing details of Pacquiao's next fight within the next seven days.

"I'm sure Manny wants to go home and enjoy the birth of his child," Schaefer said. "But we'll start talking and see where it goes."

The opponent isn't surprising. But the proposed date for Pacquiao's next match somehow is.

Hatton and Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s names have been thrown inside the ring as possibly Pacquiao's next foe, with either foe creating a match-up expected to excite the boxing community.

But Schaefer suggested that Pacquiao could return to the ring as early "as April or May".

Pacquiao said recently he wanted to take a break and that he was looking at "around five or six months" of inactivity. His trainer Freddie Roach said he wasn't looking to be back in training camp until after six months.

Roach did admit, however, that the power-punching Hatton is the better choice over Mayweather Jr., who retired earlier this year with an undefeated record.

"Hatton is the best fight out there for us right now, money-wise, style-wise. He's a hard guy. He likes to fight. It would be a very interesting fight. I think the world would love to see that and Manny has been always wants to give the world what they want," Roach said. - GMANews.TV

After dominating Paulie Malignaggi this past Saturday, Ricky Hatton hopes to land a fight with the winner of Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao. De La Hoya and Pacquiao face off next month on December 6th and Hatton reportedly will be there at ringside.

Pacquiao who remains focused on De La Hoya, admits he watched Hatton's destruction of Malignaggi and is prepared to face Hatton. Although Pacquiao is willing to fight Hatton, he is not willing to do so at the
expense of overlooking De La Hoya.

In regards to watching Hatton's last fight, in media interview sent to us here at Doghouse Boxing, Pacquiao stated :" I watched the fight happen. It was a good fight. I’m ready to fight him. I’m willing to fight Hatton but right now I’m just focused on this coming fight. And I don’t want to to change something that can affect my concentration to that fight.
