MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao is the 22nd most influential person in the world, the final result of Time Magazine’s online poll showed.
The Filipino pound for pound king garnered the most number of votes among 203 finalists for Time’s 100 Most Influential People for 2009 with a total of 20,391,818 after two months of online voting. However, his relatively low average influence rating of 27 out of 100 pulled him down to No. 22 overall in the final roster.
moot, the 21-year-old college student and founder of online community 4chan.org, emerged as this year’s most influential person in the world, beating heavyweights such as US President Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama. moot, whose real name is Christopher Poole, got the next biggest total votes after Pacquiao (16,794,368) and he cemented his claim to No. 1 with an average of 90 on the influence scale.
The only Filipino and boxer in the candidates for the Time 100, Pacquiao was the second most influential among sports celebrities, trailing only NBA star Kobe Bryant, who was ranked ninth with an average rating of 39 and 1,977,676 votes.
Only two other athletes landed in the Time 100, top Spanish netter Rafael Nadal (60th) and Olympic hero swimmer Michael Phelps (72nd). Outside the 100 were baseball star Alex Rodriguez and golf great Tiger Woods, who wound up 106th and 134th, respectively.
The 30-year-old Pacquiao, who consistently leads or figures prominently in online polls involving boxing, reached as high as 6th place early in the Time voting but apparently, his rabid fans failed to give premium on the rating aspect of the poll and only concentrated on pushing his total votes up.
"Influential" Pacquiao is set to strut his stuff on the ring this Saturday when he mixes it up with Ricky Hatton for the latter’s Ring Magazine and IBO light welterweight title in Las Vegas, Nevada. –GMANews.TV
