Pacquiao and Hatton: A comparison outside the ring

Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, the iconic prized fighters set to collide on May 2 in the “Battle of East and West”, have always been pictured to be worlds apart as far as the fight is concerned.

But outside the ring, it’s virtually "East meets West” for the two boxers because they both actually share a lot of similarities, as revealed by their Wikipedia entries.

Firstly, Hatton and Pacquiao are of the same age, 30.

Hatton was born Richard John Hatton on Oct. 6, 1978 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England while Pacquiao was born Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao in Kibawe, Bukidnon, Mindanao on Dec. 17, 1978.

Hatton is the Ring Magazine Junior Welterweight Champion, whereas Ring Magazine currently rated Pacquiao as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Fatherhood and brotherhood

“The Pacman” has four children with his wife Jinkee. They are Jemuel, Michael, Princess and Queen Elizabeth.

“The Hitman” is a father himself. He has a son named Campbell with his ex-girlfriend. He is presently living with his girlfriend, Jennifer Dooley.

Fighting inside the square ring runs in their blood, as both fighters have brothers who are also boxers.

Bobby Pacquiao and Matthew Hatton are living in the shadows of their superstar siblings. They do receive all out support from Manny and Ricky, respectively.

Trademark entrance song

The music that plays whenever Hatton marches towards the ring is "Blue Moon", the Manchester City club song, by the band Supra.

Hatton’s choice of entrance music reflects his passion for football and the Manchester City club. In fact, his father and grandfather were former club players.

On the other hand, Pacquiao has been using his own songs as entrance music.

“The People’s Champ” has gone into recording his own music because of his passion for singing.

Showbiz

Along with recording his own songs, Pacquiao has also dabbled in hosting and acting.

As a celebrity, Pacquiao has a lot of commercial endorsements for food, beverage and medicine.

He also made an endorsement for the Bureau of Internal Revenue. As BIR endorser, he is enjoining his countrymen to rightfully pay their taxes.

Meanwhile, Hatton also hosts his own live chat show on Nuts.TV called “Ricky Speaks.”

“The Hitman” even told ABS-CBN News during their UK promo tour that he is open to do a commercial project with Pacquiao.

National recognition

In the national scale, both fighters have also gained praise and recognition for being notable sportsmen.

In the 2007 New Year's Honors List, Hatton received the award of MBE for services to sport. The MBE means he is a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, the order of chivalry established by King George V in 1917.

Because of the award, “The Hitman’s” name is followed by ‘MBE' -- as Ricky Hatton MBE.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, was recognized in 2008 by the House of Representatives as “The People’s Champ.”

The Lower House issued a resolution sponsored by South Cotabato Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio, who defeated Manny in the in the 2007 congressional elections. The resolution recognized Pacquiao for “his achievements and in appreciation of the honor and inspiration he has been bringing to the Filipino people.”

“The Pacman” also received a plaque from House Speaker Prospero Nograles.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Manny became the flag bearer for Team Philippines even if he was not an Olympian.

Giving back to community

Hatton and Pacquiao have already raked in millions of earnings from the high-profile matches they headlined.

But both of them know how to return the favor to their respective communities.

“The Pacman” has the Manny Pacquiao Foundation. He also gives away cash and grocery bags to the less fortunate. He even cites his desire to help the poor as his reason for aspiring to join the political arena.

Hatton, meantime, supports “The Village News,” a local children's newspaper made by children in aid of charity. In addition, he has helped in fundraising events by appearing at charity auctions. Hatton also became a guest speaker for The Toby Henderson Trust, a center for Autism Development.

He helped raise money for the center by donating and being part of its successful auction. —research by MA. ROSANNA MINA, abs-cbnNEWS.com
